A fractured ankle is one of the worst bone breaks. Fractured ankle could be due to the break of one or more bones in the ankle joint.

The ankle joint is made up of multiple bones. These bones are:

Tibia(Shinbone): It is the larger bone in the lower leg.

Fibula(calf bone): It is the smaller bone in the lower leg.

Talus: Between tibia, fibula, and calcaneus (heel bone) talus is the located. It is also known as a small bone.

A broken ankle is one of the most painful fractures in the body.

Symptoms of Broken Ankle:

You might hear a sound of snapping or grinding while ankle bone break or here are some of the other symptoms:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Difficulty bearing weight
  • Dizziness due to pain

Lateral Malleolus Fracture

These are the most common fractures. It involves the bony knob that can be seen outside of the ankle called the lateral malleolus.

Medial Malleolus Fracture:

This type of fracture affects the inside knob of the ankle that is called the medial malleolus. It usually happens at the end of the tibia.

Bimalleolar ankle fracture

Bimalleolar ankle fracture involves inside and outside knobs in the ankle. Fibula and tibia, both are affected by this type of fracture.

  • Bimalleolar equivalent fracture
  • Posterior malleolus fracture
  • Trimalleolar fracture
  • Pilon fracture
  • Maisonneuve fracture
  • Syndesmotic injury

What to do If your Ankle is Broken?

If your ankle is broken you must visit the doctor as soon as possible. Meanwhile, you can apply ice, to reduce pain.

Keep the weight off your foot. Cover the wound with a clean dressing if it is bleeding.

Proper treatment of a broken ankle depends on the type of injury. In worst cases, without surgery, it is impossible to recover.

Ways to Treak Broken Ankle.

Walking boot, cast, or splint:

These types of treatments can recover ankle if the injury is mild. These treatments help to keep the ankle on its place while the bone heals.

Crutches:

Crutches help you to walk without bearing weight on your ankle that helps in ankle recovery.

Reduction:

If your broken bone is dislocated, putting it back on its place is known as reduction. It is a painful process, so sometimes anesthesia is used to control the pain.

Surgery

For severe ankle pain, Surgery is recommended. Metal rods, plates, screws are used to realign the bone. This process is used in the worst conditions of ankle fracture.

How much Time is Required to Recover Completely?

Exact time can’t be guessed as it depends on many factors. Age, current health, type of injury and consumption of quality food can faster or slower the process of injury healing.

But generally, broken ankles take 6 to 12 weeks to heal. Injuries that don’t require surgeries can heal in 6 weeks. Injuries that include surgeries can take up to 12 weeks.
