Adverse Effects of Eating Too Much Salt

Short Term Effects:

Eating too much salt in a day or in a single meal may increase the risk of short-term consequences.

Water Retention:

Our kidneys keep a specific amount of water in them so sodium can be mixed with it. If you consume too much salt, kidneys may retain more water.

Increased Blood Pressure:

Salt can increase blood pressure because due to the extra amount of salt, a huge amount of the blood will flow in the blood vessels. But it will be back to the normal amount soon. How much time it takes and how much blood will flow depends on various factors i.e age, health, genetics, and hormones.

Increased Thirst:

An excessive amount of the salt will increase your thrust. Because your body tries to balance sodium and water content in the body this will increase your thirst with a dry mouth.

Long-term Effects:

There are various long term effects of eating too much salt that are listed below:

  • Salt is linked with cancer. Excess amounts of salt can increase the risk of various types of cancers.
  • Increase the risk of various heart diseases, chronic diseases, and premature death.


Salt is good for health as it plays various important functions in the body. But excessive consumption of salt may have adverse effects on health. Always go for low salt products such as reduced sodium chicken bone broth.
